ABOUT THE RELEASE This release presents the complete 60-minute score. These tracks are in film order. The Digital Album only featured about 40 minutes and the tracks were reordered for a different listening experience. Two bonus tracks were created which extends the CD running time to 67 minutes. The first is a further development of the “investigation” motif and the “guardian angel” theme. It was originally intended for the End Credits but was not right tonally to end the score with this track. The other track is my own “re-imagining” of Tubular Bells. This version is much, much darker than any other renditions before it and it sounds like a tribal celebration heard straight out of hell.

ABOUT THE MUSIC Horror Re-Scored is my personal ongoing series of concept albums in which I compose an entire original alternate score to a past horror film. This and every subsequent volume are treated as though I had originally been hired to score the movie chosen. For “Volume 2”, the film used was The Exorcist 3.

Scoring this film was more challenging than anticipated. It is wall to wall with dialogue, exceptionally good dialogue, but nonetheless, there is a lot of it. This forced very judicial “spotting” decisions resulting in shorter cues that would play over the last third of any dialogue scene the music was supporting.

The stylistic approach was inspired by two things. First, the solitude and spiritual sound established the film’s composer Barry De Vorzon. Second, discovering Christopher Young had been hired to replace some or all of De Vorzon’s work. Being a fan of Young’s music and what De Vorzon had created, it felt prudent to take a similar dark, experimental, yet spiritual direction with the music.

All the musical ideas are original and does not use any of De Vorzon’s material nor Tubular Bells in the score itself. However, a bonus track is included that is a Re-imagining of Tubular Bells.

There are three main themes present. A lack of faith theme on warm synth pads, a haunted past theme on celeste slightly detuned bells, and a guardian angel theme on synth choir. For the motifs, there are several. The first is the omnipresent “heartbeat” motif heard ticking away during the entire score as a reminder that time is running out. The second motif is the “investigation motif” which plays over moments of clues and revelations made during the investigation. To represent Evil, a sound design approach was taken to represent the cold, methodical, “machine” like quality of how Evil was executing its plans.

about

ABOUT THIS ALBUM
Continuing with creating complete alternate film scores to his favored for past Horror films, D4Disgruntled brings you “Horror Re-Re-Scored: Vol. 2”. The film chosen was – “The Exorcist III”. Besides having a great murder mystery story entangled with the supernatural elements, this film has some of the best dialogue scenes. There were “lots” of them and man y times quite lengthy, making it more challenging for D4Disgruntled to compose around. The original score by Barry De Vorzon consisting of processed and synth drone voices along with an array of growls and grumblings was a great solution to not detract from all that dialogue and he used it so sparingly that many people think the movie has no score.

So, what would D4Disgruntled do different musically and stylistically? After learning of Chris Young having been brought onboard to replace De Vorzon’s score (but was eventually let go after Blatty’s win to keep it), I knew what I was going to do. My approach would be an homage to Chris’s style of the late 1980s and early 1990s transparent writing and sound design elements. Volume two would be my dedication to Chris Young for being an inspiration to me all these years.

For his score, D4Disgruntled created a backstory with the music that connects the stories of Kinderman, Karris, and the mystery around The Gemini Killer while addressing the spiritual and supernatural elements as well as address the innocent victims murdered by an unseen killer. The score has three main themes and various motifs. The style is dark, melancholy, and ambient but with a spiritual edge always, even when in the direct presence of Evil. For those familiar with the film, those listeners will know what scenes these tracks play over. For those listeners unfamiliar with the film, this will be a new listening experience altogether.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM ORDER: This digital album release is only a 41-minute representation of D4Disgruntled’s compete score to the film. The cues are also not in chronological film order. He chose highlights from the score and re-arranged them to create a different listening experience. The full score run-time is just over 60 minutes.

TUBULAR BELLS NOT USED Tubular Bells was not used in any form throughout the score. It had been considered in the beginning, but a few trial and error moments proved it just wasn’t gonna work. However, D4Disgruntled did create a bonus track featuring a newly “re-imagine” rendition of “Tubular Bells” in the same style and tone of the score. It is much darker and evil sounding, almost like a demonic tribal celebration heard straight from Hell. It is available as a Single and on the upcoming Special Collector’s Edition CD featuring the complete score D4Disgruntled composed. See below.

UPCOMING LIMITED RUN SPECIAL COLLECTOR's EDITION: I will be releasing on CD only a very short, limited run of the complete score that I composed to the film. The music will be presented in film order. The run-time is at 1 hour and 7 minutes. That is roughly 25 minutes of additional music of which two cues were specially composed as bonus tracks - one being a rendition of Tubular Bells in the style of the score and the other a more fully realized version of the main theme to the film. Additionally, The SCE release will have liner notes that discuss my approach more to the score and a summarized break-down of the tracks and what scenes they went to.
