While the original Digital Album (released in October of 2018) featured highlights (43 minutes worth of music) from the complete 58 minute concept score, the music was presented in non-chronological order for a different listening experience.

This work is solely original and does not feature any John Carpenter nor Alan Howarth material from Halloween 4. The film was simply used as a visual template for inspiration to which to compose original music. The style could be considered a homage to that for which Alan Howarth developed for Halloween 4, but that is where the similarity ends.

about

ABOUT THE ALBUM
This is the first album in what will become a forthcoming series of albums in which D4Disgruntled will compose a complete alternate score to various horror films he favored in his youth. No musical ideas from the original scores of these films are used on any of the albums. All that is heard is new and original musical ideas exclusive to D4Disgruntled.

The film chosen was Halloween 4. Much like the real-world scenario, D4Disgruntled composed a complete score to an existing film with an established narrative to which his focus could be placed while writing the music. The only difference was that he did not “spot” much of the film. Except for a few scenes he felt could use music, he mostly wrote most music over existing music cue placement.

The music composed follows and supports the narrative structure in the film. If the listener knows the film, then they can guess what scenes D4Disgruntled's music plays over. For those who don't, this will be a new listening experience. The tracks are not in chronological order deliberately as to create a different listening experience to the score separate from the film. There is a Special Collector's Edition CD of the Complete Score coming soon that will only be available on CD. That will have all the music in chronological order for the "completists".

There are motifs and themes established early in the Main titles which get developed throughout the film and summoning up everything in the End Credits. The score transitions from a more ghostly and haunting soundscape to a harsh pounding one by the end.

The composing style and overall tone and soundscape are done in a manner to evoke a similar feel as the original music in the film but is still far different. No John Carpenter or Alan Howarth material here. It is intended to have a pseudo-1988 feel but with more modern-day composition styling.

So Why Re-Score? I got the idea to compose my own music to a past film for use as part of my demo reel from film composer agent Richard Kraft (of Kraft/Engel Management). For aspiring composers of media projects who are trying to “break-in” and have little to no professional work in their portfolio, he recommended they re-score a scene or two from a film they liked with their own musical ideas and approach. I expanded upon the suggestion made by Kraft by setting out to compose complete scores to films, specifically horror films for now.

Special Significance This is significant in that when D4Disgruntled. In 1990, when he was a teenager beginning to compose, he chose this as his first film to attempt scoring on a 61-key Casio keyboard. Each track was always just one instrument - a string with ethereal choir, a warm synth pad, a hollow spacey synth or a piano string combo. He had no DAW, let alone, no computer. D4Disgruntled sat in front of the TV, plugged his keyboard into the stereo, hit record and started playing.
